Skilled Workers: Your Route to British Citizenship

Published 06 May 2024

If you’re a skilled worker beginning your immigration journey towards British Citizenship, it’s important to know the steps to take.

Skilled Worker Visa

The first step to British Citizenship is securing a Skilled Worker Visa.

Formerly a Tier 2 Visa, the Skilled Worker Visa is for individuals who have been offered a job by a UK employer who has a valid Sponsor Licence.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

After residing in the UK for a specific period (usually five continuous years for most skilled workers), individuals can then apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

ILR is a form of settled status in the United Kingdom and grants the right to live and work in the UK without any immigration restrictions. This is the next step towards full British Citizenship.

Residence Requirement

During the five-year period on a Skilled Worker Visa, individuals must ensure they meet the residence requirement by spending a certain amount of time in the UK.

This typically includes not exceeding the permitted absences and maintaining continuous residency without any significant breaks.

English Language and Life in the UK Test

As part of the naturalisation process, applicants need to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language and pass the Life in the UK Test.

These tests assess language skills and knowledge of British society, history and culture.

Citizenship Application

Once individuals have held ILR for at least 12 months, they’ll become eligible to apply for British Citizenship, also known as naturalisation.

This involves completing the application form, providing supporting documents and paying the necessary fees.

Citizenship Ceremony

If the citizenship application is successful, applicants are invited to attend a citizenship ceremony where they pledge their loyalty to the UK and receive their Certificate of Naturalisation.

It’s important to note that each individual’s immigration journey may vary based on their specific circumstances.

Consulting with immigration professionals will provide personalised guidance and support throughout the process to maximize the chances of a successful British Citizenship application.
