When does the UK visa processing time start?

Your UK visa application begins the processing phase when you have:

  • completed verification of your identity and submitted all required documents via the UK Immigration: ID Check app; or
  • if you’re applying inside the UK,
    • you’ve attended your biometrics appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service (UKVCAS) or Service and Support Centre (SSC) to provide your photograph and fingerprints.
  • if you’re applying outside the UK,
    • you’ve attended your biometrics appointment at a visa application centre (VAC) to provide your photograph and fingerprints.

When does the UK visa processing time end?

The processing time will be classed as finished when you’ve received an email or letter to let you know that the UKVI has reached a decision.

Are there delays in UK visa processing?

UK visa processing can be delayed for multiple reasons, including but not limited to:

  • Time of year
  • The complexity of the case
  • Volume and accuracy of documents provided
  • Inaccuracy of evidence provided or additional evidence required
  • Increased visa demand of UKVI
  • Review of any concerns or suitability requirements.

Can I get a faster decision on my visa application?

UKVI offers priority and super priority services for some indefinite leave to remain (ILR) applications.

UK visa priority service

The priority service costs an additional £500 in addition to your application and should provide a decision with five working days, or 30 working days for family visa applications outside the UK.

UK visa super priority service

The super priority service costs an additional £1,000 in addition to your application and should provide a decision by the end of the next working day.
