What is a SELT?

A SELT is a Secure English Language Test that individuals must take in order to be able to get either a family visa, work visa, or study visa to be able to live in the UK.

The test is designed to allow you to showcase your proficiency in the English language. You must take this test in order to live in the UK for an extended period of time for either Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship.

A SELT test provides an accurate measure of language proficiency through practical and realistic tasks that would normally be taken in an English-speaking environment.

Which test do I choose?

There are different levels of tests that you can choose from, from beginner through to proficiency for either two skills, speaking and listening, or four skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

There are two types of tests due to different immigration routes requiring varying levels of English language ability. The test you will need to take depends on what you are applying for.

For the following applications, you will need to take a test that assesses your reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities:

  • Health and Care Worker
  • High Potential Individual
  • Innovator Founder
  • Minister of Religion
  • Scale-up Worker
  • Skilled Worker
  • Start-up
  • Student
  • Temporary Work – International Agreement (private servants in a diplomatic household making applications for entry clearance)

For the following applications, you will need to take a test that assesses your speaking and listening abilities:

  • Citizenship
  • International Sportsperson
  • Parent
  • Partner
  • Representative of an Overseas Business
  • Settlement (also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain)

The level of test you will need, known as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level, will depend on the route you are applying for.

How do I register?

You can register for a SELT test via the Trinity College London website by selecting which specific exam suits your requirements.

How much does a SELT test cost?

Depending on which test you require, prices range from £150 – £180.
