Following changes to the UK’s immigration rules, care workers have been impacted by the 11th March 2024 update which means they’re unable to bring their partners or children with them to the UK.
Since this update, the Migration Observatory has released a statement commenting on these changes and how they might affect migrant care workers choosing the UK as an option for recruitment:
“Removing visa options for care workers’ partners and children will almost certainly make the UK a less attractive destination to care workers with family members. However, it’s unclear how it will affect recruitment overall. This is because it depends how workers and employers respond.” (Migration Observatory)
The Migration Observatory goes on to share that employers may now decide to recruit more single individuals or fewer workers with families, or see more applications from partners who may now decide to pursue a career in care and both utilise a care worker visa as main applicants.
The main goal of changes to the UK’s immigration policies was to reduce net migration, however, it’s evident that this will pose further implications across varying industries, in particular the care sector.
