What is UK self-sponsorship?

“Self-sponsorship” isn’t a separate UK visa category. It’s an informal term used to describe a lawful immigration structure under the Skilled Worker route.

Instead of relying on an unrelated UK employer, you may establish or acquire a genuine UK company.

If that company obtains a Skilled Worker sponsor licence, it may be able to sponsor you for a Skilled Worker visa in a genuine, eligible role.

Who is eligible for UK self-sponsorship?

Self-sponsorship may be suitable for you if:

  • You’re an entrepreneur or company founder;
  • You’re an overseas business owner or director who’s establishing a genuine UK presence;
  • You’d prefer not to rely on an unrelated employer for sponsorship;
  • You’re a consultant or professional who wants to operate through a formal UK company structure; or
  • You’re a senior professional looking for more independence and a potential long-term route to settlement, known as Indefinite Leave to Remain and later British citizenship, if the relevant requirements are met.

How to apply for a self-sponsorship Skilled Worker visa

There are four main steps to complete to sponsor yourself for a Skilled Worker visa in the UK:

1. Set up or acquire a UK company

  • Register a UK company with Companies House or acquire an existing UK business.
  • Prepare a realistic business plan and evidence of intended or existing trading activity.
  • Arrange appropriate business banking and financial records where available.
  • Ensure the company is genuine, lawfully operating, and either trading or genuinely ready to trade in the UK.

2. Apply for a Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence

  • Apply to the Home Office for a Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence.
  • Provide evidence that the business is genuine and operating, or genuinely preparing to operate, in the UK.
  • Put appropriate HR and compliance systems in place.
  • Appoint suitable Sponsor Licence key personnel, including an Authorising Officer, in line with Home Office requirements.
  • Show that the business can meet ongoing sponsor duties, including record-keeping, reporting, worker monitoring and right-to-work compliance.

3. Assign a Certificate of Sponsorship

  • Once the Sponsor Licence is approved, the company may assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship for a genuine Skilled Worker role.
  • The role must be eligible for sponsorship and meet the relevant occupation code, skill level, salary threshold and going rate requirements.

4. Apply for your Skilled Worker Visa

  • Submit your Skilled Worker visa application using the assigned Certificate of Sponsorship.
  • Meet the role eligibility, salary and going rate requirements. For many applicants, the general salary threshold is currently £41,700* or the applicable going rate, whichever is higher, unless an exception applies.
  • Meet the English language requirement.
  • Meet the financial maintenance requirement, unless this is certified by the sponsor or an exemption applies.
