Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review family visa minimum income requirement

Published 15 October 2024

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) is reviewing the family visa Minimum Income Requirement (MIR), currently set at £29,000, with potential changes expected by Spring 2025. The review was commissioned by the Home Secretary and will involve a detailed analysis and input from stakeholders.

Current MIR and the need for review

In April 2024, the MIR was significantly raised from £18,600 to £29,000, with a potential future increase to £38,700. This increase has made it challenging for many families to meet the requirement for reunification. Following these concerns, the Home Secretary has asked MAC to review the financial conditions for family visas.

Stakeholder involvement

MAC Chair, Professor Brian Bell, has confirmed that stakeholders will be invited to contribute through a Call to Evidence. The review is planned to take nine months, aiming for completion by Spring 2025, provided there are no delays in data access.

Possible outcomes

Depending on MAC’s findings, there may be changes to the MIR and the Adequate Maintenance Requirement. However, the MIR is likely to remain at £29,000 until at least early 2025.
