Important Update: Higher English Requirement for UK Settlement (ILR)

Published 10 March 2026

The UK Government plans to increase the English language requirement for migrants applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as part of the proposed “Earned Settlement” reforms.

What is Changing?

At the moment, many work visa holders need to show English at B1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) when applying for settlement.

From 26 March 2027, this requirement will increase to B2 level. This means applicants will need to demonstrate a higher level of English ability when applying for ILR.

Who Will This Affect?

The new B2 requirement will apply to migrants on several work and business visa routes, including:

  • Skilled Worker
  • Scale-up Worker
  • Global Talent
  • Representative of an Overseas Business
  • UK Ancestry
  • International Sportsperson

What Does This Mean for Visa Holders?

If you plan to apply for settlement after 26 March 2027 and you don’t have a UK degree taught in English or a passport from a majority English-speaking country, you will likely need to pass a B2 English language test.

Anyone planning to apply for settlement in the future should start preparing early to make sure they meet the new requirement. If you are unsure how this change may affect your immigration plans, it is important to get advice in advance.
