The UK Government plans to increase the English language requirement for migrants applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as part of the proposed “Earned Settlement” reforms.
At the moment, many work visa holders need to show English at B1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) when applying for settlement.
From 26 March 2027, this requirement will increase to B2 level. This means applicants will need to demonstrate a higher level of English ability when applying for ILR.
