Delays in obtaining undefined certificates of sponsorship (CoS): what sponsors need to know

Published 10 December 2025

Are you planning to extend a Skilled Worker’s visa or bring new talent on board? At Five Star, we know how crucial it is to keep your workforce running smoothly – but right now, sponsors are facing significant delays when requesting additional allocations of undefined Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS).

What’s happening?

The Home Office is currently taking up to 18 weeks to process standard requests for extra undefined CoS. While a priority service is available (with a turnaround of around 5 working days), slots are limited and not always guaranteed.

Why does this matter?

If you run out of CoS, you won’t be able to sponsor extensions or new hires until your request is approved – putting your business and your employees at risk.

Our advice for sponsors:

  • Review your current CoS allocation now and regularly at intervals.
  • Identify any extensions needed in the next year and apply for additional allocations at least six months in advance.
  • Make sure you have the required supporting evidence for the request to hand (such as job/worker details) to speed up your application.
  • If it’s for a potential new recruit, consider using the priority service if time is tight – but act fast, as slots fill quickly.
  • If it’s an extension, but there are fewer than 18 weeks before expiry, also consider using the priority service.

Don’t get caught out by delays.

Staying ahead of your allocation needs is the best way to protect your business and your sponsored workers. If you’re unsure about your current allocation or need help with an application, our immigration specialists at Five Star are here to guide you every step of the way.
